Tournament Info

Location and General Info:

The 2024 Purdue Martial Arts Open will be held on March 23, 2024 at the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center, West Lafayette, Indiana. Doors open at 8:20 am and competition begins at 10:00 am. Parking is free at the parking lot, and tournament doors will be located near the main entrance labeled with signs.

This tournament is open, meaning all styles are welcome including karate, taekwondo, kung fu, tang soo do, and more. Divisions include forms, weapons, and sparring which are separated by age, experience level, and gender.

A judge's and rules briefing will be held at 9:00 am in the competition venue. Competition will proceed starting with the lowest age and rank divisions. Competitors in forms divisions will start first, after comes weapons, then sparring division competitors will proceed after all forms divisions are finished.  More tournament info is located in our rule book. Online registration closes March 21. Each competitor must register online and spectators / coaches are required to purchase spectator / coach entry tickets. Each division ticket registers one competitor. Group school and volunteer discounts are available. To register multiple competitors, add more tickets. Experience levels:

Divisions will be divided using the experience level criteria below:

 

  • Beginner: < 2 years of training

  • Intermediate / Advanced: < 4 years of training

  • Black Belt: 4+ years of training or black belt rank received within the competitor's style

Division List:

Competitors will be placed according to the divisions below and their respective gender / rank:

*Note:  Divisions may be combined or split depending on number of competitors to ensure everyone gets a full and fair competitive experience. A detailed schedule, confirmed division list, and rings will be sent out once online registration closes. Divisions will be run as best to follow the tournament schedule, but divisions times and lengths are subject to change.

Competitors must compete with the highest rank rank received in their style. It is the competitors duty to ensure they are at the tournament to be ready for their division when called over the loudspeaker. Officials and Volunteers Needed

To diversify judging and aid in competition processes, officials and volunteers are needed. Benefits in registration costs and spectator fees are available to volunteers and officials. If interested, please let us know below:

Awards

Awards will be given to the top three finishers of each division. A cash prize of $50 will be awarded to the winners of the Black Belt, 18 - 29 age divisions.

About Us

The Purdue Karate Club is a student organization at Purdue University that practices Goju-ryu Karate. The club has been in existence since 1990 and is led by Kyoshi Kevin Webb, who is the chief instructor. The club offers training and instruction to students, staff, and faculty at the university, and aims to promote the physical and mental benefits of the martial art of Goju-ryu Karate. The training sessions are held regularly on campus, and the club also participates in competitions and other events.
